Raising the Bar: Insights from a Gathering of Game-Changers

Raising the Bar: Insights from a Gathering of Game-Changers

This past week, I had the privilege of speaking at The Wykeham Collegiate's Sports Conference, a bold, beautifully curated event that brought together high-performance coaches, sports scientists, mentors, athletes, and changemakers, all united by a shared mission: unlocking human potential.

The speaker lineup was exceptional, with each contributor offering a unique lens on high performance, development, and leadership in sport and life. Highlights included:

  • Richard Sutton, whose session on building high-performing teams stood out for its powerful reframing of pressure as a privilege and a key ingredient in sustaining excellence with courage and connection.
  • Andrew Gray, who shared vital insights on training load management for youth, an essential conversation for anyone working with young athletes.
  • Michael Horak, whose reminder that "talent is never enough" resonated deeply, driving home the importance of mindset, discipline, and everything that happens outside of structured training.
  • Andy Birkett, world champion canoeist, who brought authenticity and wisdom to the stage with his story of perseverance and long-game thinking.

I was honoured to contribute by speaking about resilience, purpose, and the power of choosing your own narrative, especially when the waters get rough. I also had the chance to engage with the high school girls earlier in the day, making it a double opportunity to inspire and connect.

The feedback from attendees was moving, many shared that they felt newly empowered to leap into the unknown, to adapt, and to persevere… even if it's just one more stroke, one more breath, one more day.

Whether in water, on the field, or in the everyday currents of life, I believe our most vital tools remain the same: courage, adaptability, and vision.

Thank you to The Wykeham Collegiate for the honour, and to every brilliant mind and open heart in the room. Here's to raising the bar, and to supporting the next generation as they push through the hard stuff and into their greatness.

Bring Carina to your stage.
