Every now and then, you walk into a room and feel an energy that's bigger than the event itself.
That's exactly what happened at Broll Property Management's inaugural Beyond the Working Women gathering in Johannesburg. It was an afternoon of real connection, where powerful women took a moment to pause the noise of daily leadership and explore who they are beyond their roles and responsibilities.
I had the honour of joining as keynote speaker and MC for the day, sharing my journey from open-water swimming to creative entrepreneurship, and how courage and imagination can anchor us through uncertainty.

Broll recently hosted its inaugural Beyond the Working Women event at the Killarney Country Club in Johannesburg, a gathering designed to create a space where titles, positions, and roles could be set aside for a moment, allowing women to reconnect with themselves beyond the busyness of work.
The afternoon featured keynote speaker Carina Bruwer, an open-water marathon swimmer, motivational speaker, and internationally renowned musician, who took attendees on a journey of courage and imagination. Drawing from her own experiences, Carina challenged the audience to face their fears head-on, to see imagination as their strongest asset, and to step into the fullest version of themselves when life's adversities strike. The event drew an influential audience of women leaders: CEOs, COOs, portfolio directors, and asset managers, who together oversee billions in assets and play a significant role in shaping South Africa's commercial property landscape.
The response was overwhelmingly positive, with words like "inspired, challenged, emotional, moved, speechless, and empowered" capturing the mood of the day. According to Surine Griffin, Head of Property Management at Broll Property Group:
This wasn't just about being working women. It was about rediscovering purpose, courage, and the power to show up fully. It was a reminder that we are more than our titles, more than our roles, more than what is seen. We are more.
This event was a powerful reminder that courage isn't about having no fear, it's about moving forward in spite of it. I left inspired by the incredible women who continue to lead, innovate, and uplift others, both in business and beyond.
Bring Carina to your stage.
